RGG Studio’s Stranger Than Heaven has received a detailed hands-on report from PlayStation Blog, offering a closer look at a game that follows Makoto Daito over five decades. The October 21 preview covers combat, exploration and a surprisingly elaborate show-business system across several periods and locations. Check the PlayStation Blog for the original details.
The report begins with a prologue set in San Francisco in 1915, where Daito is pursued by the police after being framed for murder. The story then moves to Kokura in Fukuoka, also in 1915, where his relationship with Tae becomes an important part of his search for a place to belong.

The combat system gives the player separate control over the left and right sides of Daito’s body through shoulder buttons and triggers. In a long encounter at a steel mill, the preview describes alternating attacks, directional defense and differing advantages between compact one-handed weapons and heavy weapons such as a sledgehammer.
A later section in Kure, set in 1929, introduces an Arena where opponents can be challenged again under restrictions for additional rewards. The report also identifies daily activities, weapon proficiency, minigames and side stories as ways of developing Daito’s capabilities.
The 1943 Osaka segment heads in a different direction. Daito manages entertainment productions, collecting inspiration for compositions, choosing performers and instruments, planning stage effects and balancing the cost of a show against revenue targets. During performances he operates lighting and effects through prompts.
The music system can use sounds gathered while exploring or fighting, including unusual sources such as a stray dog’s bark. Compositions can receive different arrangements and, according to the preview, music developed in one period can still be performed in another. The hands-on account emphasizes the planning involved in mounting productions.
These details come from a preview, so they should be understood as impressions of selected sections rather than a final review of the complete game. PlayStation Blog reports that Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled for PlayStation 5 on January 15, 2027. That date is a future launch date, separate from this report’s publication.
The hands-on report makes the combat scheme more specific than a generic claim about cinematic action. The writer describes controlling left-side and right-side attacks separately, adjusting defense to incoming strikes and deciding when the recovery time of heavy weapons is worth the extra force. In the Arena, optional constraints can alter repeat challenges. These details are observations from the PlayStation Blog author's time with selected sections. We cannot infer that every enemy encounter or playable character follows precisely the same rules.
The show-business component introduces a different resource problem: composing arrangements, selecting performers and balancing stage costs against expected revenue. The preview says that environmental sounds become musical inspiration and that songs can be carried across the story's different periods. Since the narrative stretches across several cities and decades, that persistence could help connect its separate chapters. How well this mix of fighting and production management works over a full campaign remains unanswered until the January 15, 2027 release and independent assessment.
