PEAK, a co-op climbing game developed by two studios, Aggro Crab and Landfall, has launched today on Xbox Series X|S. The game is designed for players to work together as lost nature scouts to survive and reach the PEAK—a mountain at the center of a mysterious island after a crash landing. Check the Xbox Wire for the original details.

The collaboration between Aggro Crab, an American studio based in Seattle, Washington, known for games like Another Crab’s Treasure and Going Under, and Landfall, a Swedish studio based in Stockholm, known for titles such as Content Warning and Haste, began after both teams met at a game developer conference in 2022. Following the success of their individual projects, the studios decided to collaborate on a small project during a game jam—a timed event where teams create games within strict deadlines. The game’s initial theme was discussed while the developers sat in a hot tub in Sweden, a few months before the jam took place in South Korea.

PEAK was developed with friendship as a core principle, emphasizing cooperative play. The game features a solo or co-op mode where players act as nature scouts, with the mountain at the center of the island being the only path to rescue. The game includes four biomes, each with life-threatening obstacles, and requires players to scavenge for questionable food and manage injuries carefully, as setbacks reduce stamina and make climbing more challenging.

This release includes all content updates, such as additional biomes, cosmetics, and features. The game’s map rotates completely every 24 hours, meaning players must attempt to reach the PEAK on a new island layout each day. Players can communicate through proximity chat, place ropes and climbing spikes to assist teammates, and earn badges for survival achievements. The game also includes character customization, campfires, marshmallows, and ghosts.

PEAK supports cross-platform play, allowing players to form scout troops across multiple platforms. The game is available for offline single-player and online co-op with up to three friends, with multiplayer restricted to friends-only interactions. The release price is $9.99, and it was developed by three Aggro Crab and four Landfall developers who worked in a rented apartment in South Korea, fueled by Korean BBQ and coffee.

The game’s mechanics emphasize teamwork, as the mountain changes daily and players must rely on each other to scale it. As stated in Scoutmaster Myres’ guidebook: 'Never abandon a friend in need.' This philosophy directly influences the game’s design, ensuring that players cannot succeed alone and must cooperate to survive the island’s challenges.
